High Point

Graphic Design

High Point is a public skatepark located in State College, PA. I worked alongside the committee and pro skater Jake Johnson to design fundraising posters for the skatepark's construction. The park raised over $2.4 million in total funding and has even inspired other communities to follow a similar fundraising method.

Concept

The fundraiser would consist of two posters released on separate dates. The park itself already was named High Point park.

State College historically had tried and failed to build a public skatepark dating back to the 90's. For that reason, I wanted to play off of the name. The first poster would represent urgency It's high time for a skatepark. The second would speak to the excitement of its arrival It's fly time for a skatepark.

The content of the posters go from pretending to skate, to actually skating. This reflects the need and accomplishment throughout the fundraising journey.

Color

The first poster "It's High Time" uses dramatic, complimentary colors to amplify emotion. Yellow in the upper portion of the poster urges action and resembles the promising future to come.

The second "It's Fly Time" uses softer, natural colors like green and blue while carrying over purple from the previous poster. It feels like a  dream that is becoming reality.

Type

Poster #1 uses Interstate, a sound and sturdy type. The statement is captivating and urgent. The type is unwavering in its plea.

Poster #2 uses a variety of energetic typefaces including Shrikhand and CCZzzap. We are forward looking because the park is coming and the people are excited.

After raising over $2.4 million in total funding, the park finished construction and held a grand on May 29th 2026. Many local businesses proudly supported the cause by hanging up the poster in their stores.

In preparation for the grand opening, I collaborated with Boal City on a unique set of beer labels for a promotional beer. The beer would be named after the park: High Point Session Ale. And each pack would come with 4 individual label designs for each of the 4 action sports (skateboarding, BMX, scootering, and rollerblading).

Wordmark

The beer name needed to be able to stand on its own. So for that reason it had to be treated like a wordmark. Bulyer is an organic typeface and leans into the use of gestalt through shadows. I chose it to compliment the style of the illustrations and fluid motion of each sport.

Color

A warm maroon, yellow, and cream are a comforting and exciting look. The contrast between the figures and backgrounds create a dramatic scene that is amplified by each rider's exaggerated pose. Maroon was specifically chosen for its ties to local culture, used commonly throughout the city. Maroon brings the community, yellow brings the excitement.

Type

Using such a decorative type (Bulyer), the supporting type needed to balance the label out. Sailors is used for high level information like the brew style while Oswald is used for supporting and legal information. Both typefaces are tall and skinny while Sailors is rounded and airy, working best with a touch of tracking. Oswald is compact and uniform best for blocks of informative copy.

Illustration

The idea behind each illustration was to show each sport at its foundational form. The act of movement is simple but expressive. Each figure is dramatically and excitedly moving toward their goal: a brand new skatepark.

Boal City x High Point

These labels are a great example of how communities can support one another. Boal City created something that everyone, including people who don't do an action sport, can enjoy during the success of the skateparks grand opening.
